You
may be asking yourself, "What is Maha Mantra?" "Where
is it from?" "And what does it mean?"
This
is what Maha Mantra means:
The
meaning of Maha Mantra can be translated like this.
- The
Sanskrit word Maha means great.
- The
Sanskrit word Mantra is a combination
of two words. Man means ‘mind,’ and tra means
‘delivered.’
The
Maha Mantra is an ancient mantra given to us by a 16th century
Indian saint named Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
and it goes like this:
Hare
Krishna, Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama
Rama Rama, Hare Hare
This
is what the Hare Krishna Mantra (The Maha Mantra) Means:
The
mantra itself consists of only three words, Hare, Krishna, and
Rama. Defining exactly what each word means can get complicated
depending on how deep you look but I will try to keep it simple.
- The
word Krishna is pretty straight-forward.
Krishna is one of many names of God. God has many many names.
This fact can be confirmed by simply thinking about all of
the different monotheistic religions throughout the world
and recognizing that although all of these different religions
worship the same God, His names vary. The name Krishna means
all-attractive.
- The
word Rama can refer to a few different meanings
depending on who you talk to.
- Rama
can mean another name of God referring to His incarnation
as Lord Rama. His epic story is recounted in the Indian
classic, Ramayana.
- Rama
can also refer to Lord Krishna's brother, Balarama, who
appeared on this earth with Krishna about 5,000 years
ago to set things straight and make things right when
the whole world was a complete mess. Balarama is the first
expansion of Lord Krishna.
- Rama
can also refer to Radha-Raman, another name of Krishna
meaning beloved of Radha
- The
word Hare also has more than one meaning.
- It
means to address the energy of God. It's sort of a short
way of saying, "Hello, Krishna. I'm here. I need
you. Please engage me in your service and help me remember
you at all times."
- Hare
also refers to a form of the word, Hari. Which means,
"The One who takes away all miseries".
- I
have also heard that the word Hare can be a form of the
word Hara, which is another name for Radha. Radha is the
topmost devotee. It is to Radha that we look for inspiration
in devotional service. She is by far Krishna's number
one fan, his favorite devotee. If we can get the mercy
of Raddha then we can surely get the mercy of Krishna
through her.
In
Summary:
We
live in a very strange time. Never before in the history of humanity
has so much emphasis been placed on being happy. Don't get me
wrong. Happiness is great! But it's really only one side of the
coin. The problem is, people tend to feel like they need to be
happy all the time. Of course, nobody is happy all the
time. It's impossible. But because of the pressure from society
to feel this constant state of perpetual glee, when we don't feel
it, we feel like there must be something wrong with us. As a result,
we visit our doctor, tell him or her of our "depression",
and nine times out of ten are put on one or more of a wide variety
of anti-depressant drugs. Look around. I bet more than half of
the people you interact with daily are on some sort of anti-depressant
prescription drug. This is not right!!!! It's crazy. It's wrong.
It's legalized drug dealing. Don't get me wrong, I am very aware
that some people truly need these drugs to function in life but
most people do not. There are alternatives and that is what these
pages are all about.
This
maha mantra can do wonders if you just give it a chance. It's
a time-tested (try a few thousand years) remedy to worldly maladies
like depression and anxiety as well as a proven ticket to self-realization
and, well, a better life. It's calming. It's relaxing. And on
a way higher level, if you do it with love and devotion, it's
kind of like knocking on God's door and saying, "Please,
let me in. I'm out here and I need you". Basically, it's
just really good medicine with no side-effects.
You
don't have to live in a temple or shave your head or renounce
everything in your life to take advantage of this medicine. All
you have to do is surrender. This is
a key point in the book, Bhagavad Gita,
a very important book which you should
read if you want to further your understanding of the meaning
and benefit of this mantra. I put a link above which will take
you to a page explaining the Bhagavad Gita.
Surrendering
means that you must admit that you don't really know all the answers....because
you don't. You will have to put your ego aside for this to sink
in. Go ahead. Put it on the shelf over there just for a little
while. You can have it back later. :)
Admit
that this life is temporary and full of misery. Just surrender.......and
chant.
The
best part about it is, the more you chant and show God that you
are serious about it, the more He will reciprocate. Krishna will
help you. He promises this to you in the Bhagavad
Gita.
So
go forth and chant my good friend. The benefits are as wide and
open as the blue sky above. Check out the link on how to chant,
the one that says, Mantra Meditation, and
remember....You get what ya give!
